« Back to Glossary Index

Lumbar radiculopathy is a condition caused by compression or irritation of a lumbar spinal nerve root, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness radiating along the nerve’s distribution in the lower limb. It is clinically important as it helps localise neurological deficits and guides management of back pain and neurological symptoms. A common cause is a herniated intervertebral disc, which can lead to sciatica and impaired mobility.
