Thyroid nodules are discrete, palpable or radiologically distinct lesions within the thyroid gland that differ from the surrounding thyroid tissue. They are clinically important because they can represent benign growths or malignant tumours, necessitating evaluation to exclude thyroid cancer. A key concern is the potential for nodules to cause compressive symptoms or, less commonly, hyperthyroidism if they become autonomously functioning.
