Pravastatin is a hydrophilic HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor used to lower cholesterol by reducing hepatic cholesterol synthesis, thereby decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. It is clinically important for preventing cardiovascular events in patients with hyperlipidaemia or established atherosclerotic disease. Unlike some other statins, pravastatin has a lower risk of drug interactions and muscle toxicity, making it preferable in patients on multiple medications.
