Paroxysmal AF

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) is a form of atrial fibrillation characterized by sudden onset episodes of irregular, rapid atrial electrical activity that spontaneously terminate within seven days, often within 48 hours. It matters clinically because these intermittent arrhythmias increase the risk of stroke and may progress to persistent or permanent AF, necessitating timely diagnosis and management. A key complication is thromboembolism, as irregular atrial contractions promote blood stasis and clot formation in the left atrium.
