Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart, often causing sharp chest pain and characteristic ECG changes. It is clinically important because it can mimic myocardial infarction and may lead to complications such as cardiac tamponade, where fluid accumulation impairs heart function. A common association is viral infection, which triggers the inflammatory response.
