Alveolar damage refers to injury or destruction of the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs responsible for gas exchange. This damage impairs oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer, leading to respiratory distress and compromised lung function. It is a critical feature in conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), where widespread alveolar injury causes severe hypoxia and respiratory failure.
