Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition characterised by velvety, hyperpigmented thickening, typically in body folds such as the neck and axillae. It is clinically important as a marker of underlying insulin resistance, often signalling type 2 diabetes or obesity. Rarely, it may indicate an internal malignancy, notably gastric cancer.
