“Suck and swallow” refers to the coordinated neuromuscular reflex allowing an infant to draw milk into the mouth (suck) and propel it into the pharynx for swallowing. This complex action is essential for effective feeding and nutrition in neonates. Impaired suck and swallow reflexes can indicate neurological dysfunction, risking aspiration and feeding difficulties.
