Gloassary term:

Hyaline membrane formation

Hyaline membrane formation refers to the development of a layer of eosinophilic, proteinaceous material in the alveoli, primarily seen in conditions like neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This phenomenon impairs gas exchange and contributes to respiratory failure, making it crucial for clinicians to recognise and manage underlying causes effectively. A key association is the surfactant deficiency in premature infants, leading to significant morbidity.
