Autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT)

An autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) is a medical procedure in which a patient's own stem cells are harvested, typically from bone marrow or peripheral blood, and then reinfused after high-dose chemotherapy or radiation to treat conditions such as certain cancers or blood disorders. ASCT is crucial in clinical practice as it helps restore hematopoietic function while minimising the risk of graft-versus-host disease. A key complication can be the risk of infection due to immunosuppression during recovery.
