Gloassary term:

Apophysis

An apophysis is a bony outgrowth or projection that serves as an attachment site for tendons or ligaments, often occurring at the ends of long bones during growth. Understanding apophyses is crucial in clinical practice, particularly in paediatrics and sports medicine, as they can be sites of injury or stress, leading to conditions like apophysitis. A common example is Osgood-Schlatter disease, where the tibial tuberosity becomes inflamed due to repetitive strain.
