Gloassary term:

Mercapturatic acid conjugates

Mercapturatic acid conjugates are metabolites formed when glutathione conjugates of electrophilic compounds are further processed by the enzyme gamma-glutamyltransferase and cysteine conjugate beta-lyase. They are clinically significant as they serve as biomarkers for exposure to certain toxicants, including heavy metals and environmental pollutants, aiding in the assessment of toxicological risk. An example includes the detection of mercapturates in urine following exposure to acrylamide, indicating potential neurotoxic effects.
