Gloassary term:

Emesis

Emesis is the medical term for vomiting, a reflex action that expels the contents of the stomach through the mouth. It is clinically significant as it can indicate underlying conditions such as gastrointestinal obstruction, infections, or neurological disorders, and may lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances if severe. A key association is with pregnancy, where nausea and vomiting, known as hyperemesis gravidarum, can require medical intervention.
