Gloassary term:

Birefringent

Birefringent refers to a material's property of refracting light differently depending on its polarisation direction, resulting in two distinct indices of refraction. This characteristic is clinically significant in the identification of certain pathological substances, such as urate crystals in gout or amyloid deposits in tissue biopsies, which can aid in diagnosis. A key association is the presence of birefringent crystals in synovial fluid, indicative of specific arthropathies.
