Acute atrial fibrillation is a sudden onset of rapid, irregular atrial electrical activity causing an irregularly irregular heartbeat and loss of effective atrial contraction. It matters clinically because it can lead to haemodynamic instability and increases the risk of thromboembolic events, requiring prompt diagnosis and management. A key complication is the heightened risk of ischaemic stroke due to atrial thrombus formation.
