Gloassary term:

Antipyretic

An antipyretic is a medication or substance that reduces fever by acting on the hypothalamus to lower the body's temperature set point. This is clinically significant as fever can indicate infection or inflammation, and managing it can improve patient comfort and prevent complications, especially in vulnerable populations. Common examples include paracetamol and ibuprofen, which can also have side effects such as gastrointestinal irritation or liver toxicity when misused.
