Bamboo spine describes the radiographic appearance of the spine in advanced ankylosing spondylitis, where vertebral bodies fuse due to ossification of intervertebral discs and ligaments, resembling bamboo stalks. Clinically, it indicates severe spinal rigidity and reduced mobility, increasing risk of fractures and neurological complications. Recognising this aids diagnosis and management of inflammatory spondyloarthropathies.
