Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication and transcription. It is widely used to treat various infections, including urinary tract and respiratory tract infections, due to its effectiveness against Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria. A key clinical consideration is its potential to cause tendinopathy or tendon rupture, particularly in elderly patients or those on corticosteroids.
