A congenital abnormality is a structural or functional defect present at birth, resulting from genetic, environmental, or unknown causes during fetal development. It is clinically important as it can affect organ function, growth, and survival, often requiring early diagnosis and intervention. For example, congenital heart defects may lead to heart failure or developmental delays if untreated.
