« Back to Glossary Index

A dorsiflexor is a muscle that contracts to lift the foot upwards towards the shin, enabling dorsiflexion at the ankle joint. This action is essential for normal gait, allowing the foot to clear the ground during the swing phase and preventing tripping. Weakness or paralysis of dorsiflexors, such as in foot drop caused by common peroneal nerve injury, can lead to gait abnormalities and increased fall risk.
