A handlebar refers to a specific pattern of bruising or contusion on the abdomen caused by blunt trauma from bicycle handlebars during a fall or collision. It is clinically important as it may indicate underlying internal injuries such as pancreatic or bowel damage, which can be easily overlooked. Recognising a handlebar injury prompts thorough assessment to prevent missed complications like intra-abdominal haemorrhage or perforation.
