Long-standing goitres are enlarged thyroid glands that have persisted for an extended period, often due to chronic iodine deficiency or autoimmune thyroid disease. Clinically, they are important because prolonged enlargement can cause compressive symptoms and may indicate underlying thyroid dysfunction or neoplasia. A key complication is the potential development of thyroid nodules, which can sometimes undergo malignant transformation.
