Gloassary term:

Lupus anticoagulant (LA)

Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is an antiphospholipid antibody that interferes with the normal coagulation process, leading to an increased risk of thrombosis despite its name suggesting an anticoagulant effect. It is clinically significant as its presence is associated with antiphospholipid syndrome, which can result in recurrent venous and arterial thromboses, pregnancy complications, and other autoimmune disorders. Recognising LA is crucial for appropriate management and prevention of thrombotic events.
