Gloassary term:

Sacroiliac joints

The sacroiliac joints are strong, synovial articulations between the sacrum and ilium bones of the pelvis, transmitting weight from the spine to the lower limbs. Clinically, they are important as a source of lower back and buttock pain, often involved in inflammatory conditions like ankylosing spondylitis. Dysfunction or inflammation here can cause significant morbidity.
