Simvastatin is a lipid-lowering medication belonging to the statin class that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. It is used clinically to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, thereby decreasing the risk of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. A key consideration in practice is the risk of myopathy, which can be exacerbated by drug interactions or higher doses.
