Somatic mutations are genetic alterations acquired by a cell after conception, occurring in any body cell except germ cells, and are not inherited by offspring. These mutations can drive the development of cancers by causing uncontrolled cell growth or resistance to therapy. For example, somatic mutations in the TP53 gene are commonly implicated in various malignancies, influencing prognosis and treatment decisions.
