Tendon xanthomas are cholesterol-rich, nodular deposits that develop within tendons, most commonly the Achilles and extensor tendons of the hands. They are clinically significant as a visible marker of lipid metabolism disorders, particularly familial hypercholesterolemia, indicating an increased risk of premature atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Their presence aids early diagnosis and management of underlying hyperlipidaemia to prevent serious complications.
