The Thompson test is a clinical examination used to assess the integrity of the Achilles tendon by squeezing the calf muscle and observing for plantarflexion of the foot. It is important in diagnosing Achilles tendon rupture, a condition that requires prompt recognition to guide appropriate management. A positive Thompson test, indicated by absence of foot movement, strongly suggests tendon rupture and potential impairment of ankle function.
