Water deprivation test

The water deprivation test is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the body's ability to concentrate urine and assess for conditions like diabetes insipidus or the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). By restricting fluid intake and measuring changes in urine output and osmolality, clinicians can determine the underlying cause of polyuria and polydipsia. A key association is that a failure to concentrate urine despite dehydration suggests central diabetes insipidus.
