Septic describes a state of systemic inflammation caused by a severe infection, often bacterial, leading to widespread immune activation and organ dysfunction. It is critical in clinical practice because timely recognition and treatment can prevent progression to septic shock, a life-threatening condition. A key complication of being septic is multi-organ failure, which significantly increases morbidity and mortality.
