Paresthesia is an abnormal sensation such as tingling, prickling, or numbness, typically caused by nerve irritation or damage. It is clinically important as it can indicate underlying neurological disorders or peripheral nerve injury. A common example is the transient numbness experienced when pressure compresses a nerve, such as “pins and needles” after limb compression.
