Plantarflexion is the movement that decreases the angle between the sole of the foot and the back of the leg, effectively pointing the toes downward. It is essential for normal gait and balance, enabling actions such as pushing off during walking or running. Impaired plantarflexion, as seen in Achilles tendon rupture, can significantly limit mobility and require prompt diagnosis and management.
