The calcaneus is the largest tarsal bone forming the heel of the foot, providing a critical weight-bearing platform and attachment site for the Achilles tendon. It plays a vital role in gait and balance by transmitting forces from the lower leg to the ground. Fractures of the calcaneus, often resulting from high-impact trauma, can lead to chronic pain and impaired mobility if not properly managed.
