Lipid metabolism encompasses the biochemical processes involved in the synthesis, breakdown, and utilisation of lipids, including fatty acids, triglycerides, and cholesterol, essential for energy storage, cell membrane integrity, and hormone production. It is clinically significant because disturbances in lipid metabolism contribute to conditions such as atherosclerosis, impacting cardiovascular health. For example, elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol due to impaired lipid metabolism increases the risk of coronary artery disease.
