Iron supplementation is the therapeutic administration of iron compounds to correct or prevent iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia. It is crucial in clinical practice to restore adequate haemoglobin synthesis and oxygen transport, especially in populations at risk such as pregnant women or patients with chronic blood loss. Excessive supplementation can cause gastrointestinal side effects or iron overload.
