Diastolic dysfunction is the impaired relaxation and reduced compliance of the left ventricle during diastole, leading to inadequate ventricular filling at normal pressures. It is clinically important as it contributes to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), causing symptoms of congestion despite normal systolic function. Hypertension is a common underlying cause.
