Islet transplantation

Islet transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves the isolation and transplantation of insulin-producing islet cells from a donor pancreas into a recipient's liver, aiming to restore endogenous insulin production in patients with type 1 diabetes. This approach can significantly improve glycaemic control and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. However, it carries risks such as graft rejection and the need for lifelong immunosuppression to prevent this outcome.
