Adenylate cyclase toxin is a virulence factor produced by certain bacteria, such as Bordetella pertussis, that catalyses the conversion of ATP to cyclic AMP (cAMP). This increase in cAMP disrupts normal cellular signalling, leading to altered immune responses and contributing to disease pathology, particularly in respiratory infections. Clinically, it is associated with whooping cough, where it exacerbates inflammation and impairs phagocytosis, complicating patient recovery.
