Gloassary term:

Alk phosphatase

Alkaline phosphatase (Alk phosphatase) is an enzyme found in various tissues, particularly the liver, bones, kidneys, and bile ducts, involved in dephosphorylation processes. It is clinically significant as elevated levels can indicate liver disease, bone disorders, or biliary obstruction, aiding in diagnosis and monitoring of these conditions. A key association is with Paget's disease of bone, where increased Alk phosphatase reflects heightened osteoblastic activity.
