« Back to Glossary Index

Acute limb ischemia is a sudden decrease in arterial blood flow to a limb, causing a rapid onset of pain, pallor, and potential tissue loss if untreated. It is a vascular emergency requiring prompt diagnosis and intervention to restore perfusion and prevent permanent damage. A common cause is embolism from atrial fibrillation, which can lead to limb necrosis and amputation if not rapidly managed.
