Acute pericarditis is the sudden inflammation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart, typically causing sharp chest pain and characteristic ECG changes. It is clinically important because it can mimic myocardial infarction and may lead to complications such as cardiac tamponade, which requires prompt diagnosis and management. Viral infections are a common cause, highlighting the need to differentiate it from other causes of chest pain.
