The anatomical snuffbox is a triangular depression on the lateral aspect of the dorsum of the hand, bordered by the tendons of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis laterally, and the extensor pollicis longus medially. It is clinically important as a palpable landmark for assessing tenderness or swelling, often indicating a scaphoid bone fracture, which can lead to avascular necrosis if missed. Recognising pain in this area after wrist trauma guides timely diagnosis and management to prevent long-term wrist dysfunction.
