Arginine vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH), is a peptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in regulating water balance in the body by promoting water reabsorption in the kidneys and influencing vascular tone. Dysregulation of arginine vasopressin can lead to conditions such as diabetes insipidus or the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), impacting fluid homeostasis and electrolyte balance.
