The epicardium is the thin, outermost layer of the heart wall, consisting of connective tissue and mesothelial cells that form part of the visceral pericardium. It plays a crucial role in protecting the heart and facilitating coronary vessel function. Inflammation of the epicardium, as seen in pericarditis, can lead to chest pain and impaired cardiac function.
