A hematoma is a localized collection of blood outside blood vessels, usually caused by trauma or vessel rupture, resulting in tissue swelling and discoloration. It matters clinically because it can cause pain, impair function, and, if large or in critical locations like the brain, lead to serious complications such as increased pressure or tissue damage. For example, an intracranial hematoma following head injury can cause neurological deterioration and requires urgent medical intervention.
