High-risk avascular necrosis (AVN) refers to bone tissue death in areas with compromised blood supply that are particularly prone to collapse and joint dysfunction, such as the femoral head. Recognising high-risk AVN is crucial because early intervention can prevent progression to joint destruction and the need for arthroplasty. A key association is corticosteroid use, which significantly increases the risk of developing AVN in weight-bearing bones.
