Ischemia is the reduction or interruption of blood flow to a tissue, resulting in insufficient oxygen and nutrient delivery to meet metabolic demands. It is clinically significant because prolonged ischemia can cause tissue injury or necrosis, impacting organ function and patient outcomes. A common example is myocardial ischemia, which can lead to angina or myocardial infarction if untreated.
