Gloassary term:

Matrix degradation

Matrix degradation refers to the breakdown of the extracellular matrix (ECM), a network of proteins and carbohydrates that provides structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells. This process is clinically significant as it plays a crucial role in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and disease progression, such as in osteoarthritis where cartilage degradation leads to joint dysfunction. An example of matrix degradation is the action of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in inflammatory conditions.
