Pertussis toxin

Pertussis toxin is an exotoxin produced by Bordetella pertussis, the bacterium responsible for whooping cough. It plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of the disease by disrupting cellular signalling pathways, leading to increased mucus production and impaired immune responses. Clinically, pertussis toxin is significant as it contributes to the severe cough and complications such as pneumonia, particularly in infants and unvaccinated populations.
