Gloassary term:

Prolonged antibiotics

Prolonged antibiotics refer to the extended use of antimicrobial agents beyond the typical duration recommended for a specific infection. This practice is clinically significant as it can lead to antibiotic resistance, disrupt normal flora, and increase the risk of adverse effects such as Clostridioides difficile infection. For instance, prolonged antibiotic therapy in patients with chronic infections may inadvertently contribute to the emergence of resistant bacterial strains, complicating future treatment options.
